Styling a console table or side table might seem like a small detail but it is often the difference between a room that looks decorated and one that looks designed. A well-styled surface creates a visual anchor, adds personality and makes your home feel polished and intentional.

Start With a Base Piece

Every styled surface needs a foundation. A decorative tray, a stack of books or a small sculpture gives you a visual platform to build on. This base piece sets the tone – a metallic tray for modern glam, a woven basket for natural warmth or a marble slab for minimalist elegance.

Layer in Heights

The secret to a professionally styled table is varying height. Combine a tall element (like a vase, a lamp or a framed piece of art leaning against the wall), a medium element (a candle, a small plant or a decorative object) and a low element (a tray, a small bowl or a stack of books). This creates visual rhythm and keeps the eye moving.

Group in Odd Numbers

As we covered in our Interior Design 101 blog, odd-numbered groupings, especially threes, look more natural and visually interesting than even numbers. Three candles of varying heights, three small accent objects or three framed photos create a balanced yet dynamic arrangement.

Add Something Natural

Every styled surface benefits from a touch of nature. A small potted plant, a vase of fresh or dried flowers or even a decorative piece inspired by natural forms brings life and softness to the arrangement. It keeps the surface from feeling too rigid or catalog-perfect.

Include Something Personal

The best-styled surfaces tell a story. A framed family photo, a souvenir from a trip or a handcrafted accent piece from a local artisan adds character that store-bought decor alone cannot achieve.

Edit Until It Breathes

A common mistake is over-styling. If your surface feels crowded, remove one item. A styled table should have breathing room, enough space that each piece can be appreciated individually while contributing to the overall composition.
